Surgical Training

Kresge Eye Institute Residency is proud to offer a pre-surgical curriculum including a robust microsurgery course, suturing courses, the Eyesi Surgical Simulator and cataract competency course. Surgical experience is progressive over the four years of residency. In PGY2 residents will start as primary surgeons on extraocular cases and will begin primary intraocular procedures in PGY3. All residents will meet or exceed ACGME minimum requirements and Kresge Eye Institute has implemented our own minimums based on national percentiles.

PGY1

Pre-Surgical training at Kresge Eye Institute begins outside of the OR your first week of residency with a suturing lab during orientation. Residents will spend time in the OR with Kresge faculty during their 12 weeks of Ophthalmology training. In non-ophthalmology rotations, residents will spend time in the OR on ENT, OMFS, Plastics and Anesthesia.

PGY2

All PGY 2 residents have protected time to complete the Eyesi Surgical Simulator curriculum during their VA rotation.  Residents attend an 8 week microsurgery course in PGY2 with state-of-the-art Leica Surgical Microscopes. All microsurgical supplies, including instruments, suture and animal eyes are provided. Residents will begin learning the basic steps of cataract surgery in the OR during their PGY2 year and can expect to be the primary surgeon on oculoplastic and strabismus cases. Residents will also be preforming in office procedures such as chalazion removal, corneal foreign body removal, corneal culturing, SLT, YAG laser, LPI, and intravitreal injections.

PGY3

Residents that have completed the “Cataract Competency” requirements will be prepared to board primary cataract cases in the beginning of PGY3. Residents can also expect to gain additional surgical experience in anterior segment, oculoplastics, pediatric ophthalmology, and retina. Residents will gain extensive experience in Retina lasers during their PGY3 year as well.

PGY4

PGY4 Residents can expect high volume of cataract cases coming from their “Continuity of Care” clinics at the resident clinic and from their VA rotations. Senior residents will get a wide breadth of surgical experience in their final year of residency including experience with complex cases. PGY4 residents have a highly rated surgical glaucoma experience that will result in being the primary surgeon on 30-40 MIGS procedures and trabeculectomies.
