“Diagnostic and Management Pearls and Pitfalls of Retinal Degenerations”

Dr. Jayasundera is a vitreoretinal surgeon and has a clinical practice caring for patients with inherited and autoimmune retinal degenerative diseases.
His research program focuses on; 1) accurate diagnosis, 2) quantifiable phenotypic characterization of, and 3) identification of the optimal clinical endpoints for these patients.
Dr. Jayasundera’s clinical expertise puts him at the forefront of having to differentiate between autoimmune retinopathies from inherited retinal degenerations such as Retinitis Pigmentosa. This distinction is of utmost importance, as it is the basis of the decision to start or continue steroids and immunomodulatory therapy, both of which carry risks of serious side effects.
His research is funded by the NIH and he also is the Principal Investigator of multiple trials in retinal dystrophies including gene therapy and Argus II implantation surgery. He holds the position of Director of Strategic Planning in the leadership committee of the Kellogg Eye Center.
