“Optic Neuritis: It’s not just multiple sclerosis anymore”

John Chen, M.D. Ph.D. attended the University of Virginia for his undergraduate, medical, and PhD degrees. He completed his residency and Neuro-Ophthalmology fellowship training at the University of Iowa. He then took a position at the Mayo Clinic in 2014 where he specializes in Neuro-Ophthalmology. Currently, he serves as a consultant in the Departments of Ophthalmology and Neurology and an associate professor at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. Dr. Chen serves as the associate residency program director, Neuro-Ophthalmology fellowship director, and has received numerous teaching awards. He co-chairs the Upper Midwest Neuro-Ophthalmology Group and is on multiple committees for the American Academy of Ophthalmology and North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society. He has received the Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, serves on the executive board of the Minnesota Academy of Ophthalmology, and was selected for the AAO Leadership Development Program for 2020. He has over 100 publications and has received several research awards. His main research interests are in ophthalmic imaging, idiopathic intracranial hypertension, and optic neuritis.
