David Kaufman, D.O. is Professor and Founding Chair of the Department of Neurology and Ophthalmology at Michigan State University. In addition, he is Chair and medical director of the Department of Neurology at Sparrow Health System in Lansing. He has been a practicing Neuro-ophthalmologist at MSU for 30 years.
Dr. Kaufman has helped train 65 fellows in Neuro-Ophthalmology at MSU over the past 30 years and won more than 25 MSU teaching awards along with one from the University of Wisconsin.
Dr. Kaufman’s research and clinical interest include using the afferent visual system and electrophysiology to assess prognosis and early therapeutic strategies for brain disease such as multiple sclerosis and stroke. He has had eighteen years of sustained NIH funding and participated on the Executive Committee of multiple clinical trials. More recently he has helped to develop the concussion research consortium (a multi-disciplinary group) at MSU.
He has more than 160 peer reviewed publications, book chapters and abstracts focused on Neuro-Ophthalmology and more recently several publications on mild traumatic brain injury. He helped to represent Neuro-Ophthalmology on the NIH-National Eye Institute’s Five Year National Research Planning Committee in 2012. He also is also one of MSU’s representatives to the B1G Ten-Ivy League concussion summit group since 2013.
Dr. Kaufman has been the on-field neurologist for the Michigan State University football team since 2011.
